What Are the Differences Between Kerosene & Home Heating Oil?

Admin • Jun 24, 2022

The fuel type is one of the most important decisions you’ll make when upgrading your heating system or building a new home. While kerosene is a popular option, home heating oil is an affordable, environmentally friendly option that may be right for your home. Below is an overview of the differences between these two common fuel types.

The Differences Between Kerosene & Home Heating Oil

The Refinement Process

While heating oil and kerosene are both petroleum products, liquid fuel is less refined. Heating oil is essentially a denser form of diesel fuel. Kerosene, on the other hand, is a flammable gas created by refining crude oil. While prices of both fuels fluctuate, kerosene tends to be more expensive and less plentiful in the winter.

Energy Efficiency

Both heating oil and kerosene are highly efficient, especially if your furnace is relatively new. However, heating oil may contain sulfur and other impurities that can leave deposits on furnace burners, which could cause a furnace to burn less efficiently over time.

As a highly refined gas, kerosene burns much cleaner and has a lower flashpoint. Burning at lower temperatures makes kerosene slightly more efficient.

Safety

Kerosene’s lower flashpoint means it can be ignited by a spark or open flame, which increases the chances of a fire or explosion. To minimize the risk, pressurized gas has to be stored in an outside tank, either below or above ground.

Heating oil won’t ignite at temperatures below 140 degrees, so it typically won’t burn unless it’s mixed with air in a burner. Many homeowners choose oil-burning furnaces to minimize the risk of accidents that could cause serious injuries and major property damage.
